The Spring 2026 Anime Season Is Half Over, and Here's What's Actually Worth Your Time
We're at the midway point of the Spring 2026 anime season, and the lineup has been louder than most. Sequels for shows that defined the last few years are back, a couple of fresh series are punching above their weight, and there's been some bittersweet news from the industry that's worth talking about too.
Here's an honest cut of what to watch, what to drop, and what to keep an eye on for the back half of the season.
Witch Hat Atelier Is the Surprise Hit

The adaptation of Kamome Shirahama's manga has been the talk of every anime forum since it premiered in April. The art direction is doing things most TV anime budgets don't allow for, and the magic system (where spells are drawn rather than spoken) translates to screen better than I expected.
If you've been hesitating because you don't read fantasy manga, this one is the easiest entry point of the season. Slower pace, gorgeous visuals, and a protagonist whose anxiety actually drives the story instead of just decorating it.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Is Coming, Eventually

The Culling Game arc is the next big one, and the compilation movie Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution already laid the groundwork. No firm release date yet, but it's slated for the back half of 2026.
If you fell off after the Shibuya Incident, the season break is your chance to catch up. Now that Season 2 is finally on Netflix in the US (it landed May 1), there's no excuse anymore.
Dr. Stone: Science Future Part 3 Is Sticking the Landing

Dr. Stone has been doing this thing where each season somehow gets better instead of worse, which almost never happens with long running shonen. Part 3 of Science Future is no different. If you bounced off Season 1 because of the slow start, the show became something completely different around the midpoint of Season 2 and hasn't looked back.
Wistoria: Wand and Sword Season 2 Quietly Improved

The first season was fine. The second is better in every way: the pacing tightened up, the magic battles have weight, and the side characters are actually getting screen time. Worth a return if you wrote off Season 1 as generic.
Re:Zero Is Back and Still Wrecking People

The isekai everyone admits is good even when they're tired of the genre. The new arc is what fans have been waiting on for years. If you've been holding off because you forgot what was happening, the recap episodes are doing real work.
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Season 2 Has Its Own Identity Now

With the main My Hero Academia anime wrapped up, Vigilantes has to stand on its own, and Season 2 is the test. So far it's leaning harder into the moral grey areas the main show only flirted with. If you liked the original but wanted something with more bite, this is for you.
The Sad News: Two Major Losses This Year
Two industry losses worth acknowledging.
Yuji Ohno, the composer behind Lupin III's music and the iconic theme song that's been the franchise's identity since Lupin III: Part II in 1977, passed away on May 4 at age 84. He died in his sleep of natural causes. Anyone who's watched Lupin in any decade has heard his work. Hard to overstate how much of the franchise's personality was his sound.
Wakana Yamazaki, who voiced Ran Mōri in Detective Conan since the anime premiered, passed away on April 18 at age 61 after taking a hiatus earlier this year for medical treatment. Akemi Okamura is taking over the role. The Conan production has been remarkably consistent for decades, and losing one of its founding cast members is a real moment for the show.
Things to Watch for the Back Half
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing has a new visual project in the works. Bandai Namco Filmworks board director Naohiro Ogata announced it at the Gundam Conference Spring 2026, and while he wouldn't confirm the format, he said it was "definitely something long," which means a TV series or full film rather than a short. Wing fans have been waiting on this kind of news for years.
The Akane Banashi anime is also building momentum heading into the back half of spring, sitting at a 7.9 on IMDb across about 150 reviews so far. The rakugo focus is unusual enough that it deserves the attention.
What to Drop
If you started Blue Lock Season 2 and hated the animation, you're not alone. The fanbase has been openly fighting about it since the season started. Skip it for now and wait to see if production smooths out.
The Honest Recommendation
If you only have time for two shows this season: Witch Hat Atelier and Dr. Stone Season 3. If you have time for three: add Re:Zero. Everything else is icing.
